DESIGN AMBITIONS

My future career as a designer

I’m not entirely sure what field of design I want to go into in the future. I hope that while obtaining my degree in Design, I will learn more skills in many fields, which will allow me to work in a variety of mediums.

In 10 years time I would like to be collaborating with a team of people who share my values, to advance sustainable design and contribute meaningful change in the world. I read a quote by Albert Einstein once, which really resonated with me and had an impact on my career goals. It said “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile”. I think this philosophy can easily be applied when thinking about what type of projects I want to work on in the future. My specific area of interest is in environmental design, and I want to ensure that all of my designs have positive impacts on communities, from encouraging sustainable practices, to helping solve issues that they may face.

A list of 10 assumptions about my future:

  1. I will be designing for the benefit of people and the environment.
  2. To have established a design identity, where designs I make are unique to me.
  3. I will have developed a working method that is effective and efficient.
  4. I will be able to work competently across a range of media and technology.
  5. I will collaborate with people who share the same values and ideals as me.
  6. I will factor the sustainability goals into all of my big projects.
  7. I will work with a company whose goals align with mine.
  8. My work will promote sustainable practices (eg: conserving resources, cyclic design and minimal environmental impacts for production.)
  9. I will use a variety of software to enhance my design process.
  10. I will help to design new technology that enhances energy efficiency

Testing these assumptions

I will be designing for the benefit of people and the environment.

In order to test this assumption, I will need to consider what the environment will be like in 10 years time. Things like climate change, water shortages, scarce resources, lack of space will all have large impacts on my work. I will use these predictions to see what type of design may be needed. To have established a design identity, where designs I make are unique to me.

Networking and creating designs that fit with my environmental goals will help me to test this assumption. I can use my time at university, to develop my own unique style.

I will have developed a working method that is effective and efficient.

Building good working habits now will help me to develop my working skills to be even more effective in the future, and tailored to my style specifically. Exploring a range of methods will help me to narrow down which one is best suited to me. (Staff, C. B. (2013, February 8). How to create the perfect design process. G. (2021, February 18).
